Seeing your baby's face before birth is one of the best moments of a pregnancy. A 4D or 5D scan lets you watch your baby yawn, stretch and suck a thumb, in colour and in detail. In Sabah, mums-to-be search for “scan baby 5D” and “scan 4D” every month, often with the same questions: what is the difference, when should I go, and where can I get one near me? Here are the answers.

This article is general information only and is not medical advice. Your doctor will advise on the scans you need during pregnancy.

2D, 3D, 4D and 5D: What Is the Difference?

  • 2D scan: the classic black-and-white picture. Doctors use it for check-ups because it shows the inside of the baby's organs, the heartbeat and growth clearly.
  • 3D scan: a still, three-dimensional picture of the baby's face and body.
  • 4D scan: 3D in motion. You see your baby moving in real time on the screen.
  • 5D scan: the same 4D scan with more advanced image processing, which adds lighting, shadows and skin tones so the baby looks more lifelike. "5D" is a name used by clinics and machine makers, and it is not a separate medical test.

All of them use the same ultrasound technology. The difference is in how the image is processed and shown.

When Is the Best Time for a 5D Scan?

For the clearest face pictures, most clinics suggest booking between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Before that, the baby has little fat under the skin, so the face looks thin. After about 32 weeks, the baby has less room and there is less fluid in front of the face, which makes good pictures harder to get.

If you want to know your baby's gender, that can usually be seen on an ultrasound from around 18 to 20 weeks, depending on the baby's position.

A 5D Scan Is Not Your Medical Check-Up

A 4D or 5D scan is a lovely keepsake, but it does not replace your routine antenatal scans. The detailed scan around 18 to 22 weeks, which checks the baby's organs and growth, is done mainly in 2D because that view shows the inside of the body best. Keep all the check-ups your doctor recommends, and see the 5D scan as an extra.

Ultrasound is considered safe in pregnancy when it is done by trained staff on proper medical equipment.

How to Get Clearer Pictures

You cannot control everything, but a few things help:

  • Drink plenty of water in the days before the scan. Good fluid around the baby makes the picture clearer.
  • Eat something light before you come. A little movement from the baby can help it turn.
  • Wear loose clothing so your tummy is easy to reach.
  • Be patient. If the baby is facing away or has a hand over the face, the sonographer may ask you to walk around, change position, or come back another day.

Some things affect the picture and are nobody's fault, such as the position of the placenta, the baby's position and the mother's build. A good clinic will tell you honestly when the view is not clear.
